Summary

Prices of fruit and vegetables during Easter were as follows. Papaws 10d per lb---- --Bananas 9d per lb-------Tomatoes 9d per lb-------Apples 9d per lb--------Oranges 3/- per doz-------Lemons 2/6 per lb ----------Pineapples 4 1/2d per lb--------. On 25th January Irwin had to go back to camp at Townsville after being on leave at home for the last month before being sent to New Guinea on service. Heat was terrible this year being 102ƒ in the house. In April grasshoppers were bad and August mosquitoes and flies were numerous. 27th April Ken brought Elsie to spend a holiday with us they went back on the 7th May. Ken and Elsie married on the 13th October and then came up to my cottage at Emu Park for their honeymoon. 10th May Clara died. In June someone at night stole Herbs battery charger. Also in June there was a big fire at the aerodrome, it was tar that had ignited. I also took a lot of photos during the year including several of our own family groups. Iris and John had their first son in October and I took a photo of them as a family. I still did a lot of work in the di s trict for different people as well as those in town and Emu Park. I spent a lot of time at Emu Park during the year I was doing work on my cottage and also renting it as a holiday cottage I also enjoyed it quite often as a break for a few days at a time . The vegetable crops were still kept going on at home as well

6-5--: I went to town and bought a pair of shoes and got orders for rosellas. Saw Burleys about getting the motor re wound. Herb and Frank went out to Flynns and got the engine. When we got back Herb tried the motor the thing went and pumped in to the reservoir for quite a while. It was hard to understand how it could after what they had said.

7-5--: Lonnie came and g ot rosellas and strawberry runners. He said that 1 of their motors was some what burned out, on Friday at the time as ours was.
8-5--: I went in and arranged for Burleys to come out for the motor. Got tested for glasses cost £2/15/ -.
9-5--: I spent time up at Sheridans. It is a disappointing job every thing is so hard to cope with and the bloke is a real rascal.
10-5-: I went up and measured up at Westacotts for louvres and the door. Came home and worked at various jobs.
11-5-: I took one of the locks off one of our French lights and fixed it. I then worked at a front verandah door I was making for Westacotts verandah.
12-5-: I went up to Sheridans and finished his job and got my payment. It was a very unsatisfactory job to me.
13-5-: I went to Emu Park.
14-5-: Fred Thwaite and I went to Yeppoon to see Dad Cowap and family. Had a good trip, I had tea with Fred. It rained and held me up for a while.
15-5-: I went out to the trap and got 5 crabs and a small fish. Worked at De Landells till 3 and then got ready for home. I was sick of the weight of the crabs by the time I got to Rolys. Left 4 with him and brought 1 home.
16-5-: I took the crab to Myrtles and I worked at Westacotts door.
17-5-: I busied myself at home until dinner and then went to town. Paid for glass and putty, had tea with Muskers and came home.
18-5-: I worked up at Westacotts till dinnertime. Afternoon I cut out louvres I thus worked at the job all day for Westacotts.

Fixed the zinc on the safe for Beryl, painted 1 side of the door for Westacotts and had a go at frosting 1 of the windows, however a nasty wind came up and I began to feel crook and had to come in. Mum says it is going to rain but I am not so sure myself as I find there is a tendency for rain but after fooling about for a while the clouds pass away without emptying them selves.

Summary 1944.

During this year I had several trips up to Emu Park to do work to improve our cottage for more comfort and I also rented it out as a holiday cottage. Several people rented it during the year. Ted and daughter Beryl was living at Mount Morgan and I was often up there to see them and they also called in often. Dulcie Newman married a yank on the 5th August this year; she also c a lled in on Xmas day with her sister Hilda and Hildas two children to see us, while here I took photos of them. Baileys came down for Xmas Eve they were supposed to bring ice with them but failed to do so. As a result of this I reckon it was the worst Xmas I have spent in years, no ice, no ice cream, a little beer and cordials. My daughter Iris married John Hickman on 7th October I refused to go to the church to give her away. I did not go as I was still working at my cottage at Emu Park. I also d i d a lot of work for several people building houses, repairing houses, making different things when required, in other words whatever people required. I was still making a lot of toys and ports as well. I even sent toys to Bundaberg. Our 3 sons were on leave from the army at several times during the year. 8th May I got tested for a pair of glasses cost me £2/15- and I didn't get the specs until 28th May I can see well with them too, cost me £ 2/14/-. Later in the year I lost them. I made a glory bo x for Iris for her 21st birthday in July. Brother Ernie died on the 17th October. On 30th December Irwin arrived home on leave before going over seas with the army. We found that when we were at Emu Park the wind was often very strong which made it v ery unpleasant. I used to go and buy a lot of fish and crabs from the fish trap.
