Summary

Irwin went in to camp in January of this year that now makes 3 of our sons in the Army Ken, Reg and Irwin. In May I cut my arm badly with a circular saw I was working with in my own workshop. I walked up to the house with blood everywhere the cut was about 6 inches long from just below my elbow and in to the muscle along my arm and I was taken in and admitted to hospital for several days. I suffered a lot of pain and never got the full use of my left arm and many nights not getting any sleep because of the pain in the a rm. I thought I might never get the full use of my left arm. After five months of this I was admitted again to hospital and on 29th September in readiness for an operation on this arm for the following day. The doctor operated for 3 solid hours trying to repair the damage. I was discharged from Hospital on 4th October and the stitches removed on the 11th October. My arm was slow to recover properly so I did what I could and tried making toys to help to supplement the income. I made childrens toys s uch as hobby horses, cat chairs, rockers, doll cots etc I also was kept busy making toys for Toy land shop before Xmas. Herb and Iris did the selling of the vegetables for me. In July the variety they sold were flowers, lettuce, cabbage, beet, carrots, radishes, peas, beans, oranges, lemons, eggs, rhubarb, shallots, tomatoes, papaws, and pumpkins. In September they were still selling eggs, strawberries, jam, beetroot, carrots, onions, lettuce, rhubarb, flowers, papaws, peas, beans, tomatoes. 11th June the biggest army convey went past this morning that I have seen pass here. There must have been over 200.

-12: Herb and I took in the toys £9/9/- worth and 15/2 for 2 fowls and vegetables left at Mrs Allens. Then we took a case of mangoes up to the station to go to Mrs Kelly of Mungango.
-12: I started letters to Ken and Reg, made places for cucumber seeds, hoed around pumpkins. I also got Joyces cupboard finished except hanging the door and nearly made a doll cot.
-12: I sawed 2 blocks off before breakfast. After breakfast I hoed along a row of pines I then came in and made up a hobbyhorse and made a dolls cot for some boy doll 11 oclock.
-12: I went to town with Herb and Iris, bought a pair of shoes and left them at Baileys. Took the cat affair to Doctor Martells little girl. My word it is hot again. Bill Brown left 3 more melons, this makes 5 now he has left us for Xmas.
-12: I went down to Mrs Carthys twice. I had a job trying to get photos of Baileys kids. After tea I developed the film and I think the photos will be fairly satisfactory.
-12: I went to Mrs Mc Carthys and had a yarn. After tea Iris and I printed photos. The paper takes too long to expose.
-12: I made a little easel for Charley Mc L. Rest of day I lazed about, wrote to Irwin. Very warm day this was too right, you bet.
-12: I sorted out iron and set out banana suckers. It was awfully hot. We also got the piping disconnected that we are going to use this side of the house.
-12: I planted 2 rows of long beans and as I felt crook I came in. Herb went in to see Ken but was too late, he has gone up North.
-12: I cut a patch of grass etc with a sickle also picked out timber. Bob Morgan sent a magneto for us to fix.
-12: I went to town, banked £40/2/1 and I felt crook and did not get much done what I had expected. I saw Hoare about making an inside for an icebox and also about bringing our tin of honey.
