Summary

This year has been the beginning of a new era for Harry Elmar Johnson. He built his house, besides running his market garden. He pulled down his hut and had some tough excavating to do to have the foundation suitable to build his house on. He started on 2-2-1914 to build his house with the aid of a man named Russell. Russell left the job on 16th. March. He went to A.S. Thomsons Sale and bought several pieces of furniture. Cecil and Eddie made a tank for him. Brother Cecil also made the washing tub. George Ward and Cecil finished the plumbing on the house. At 5.30 on 13-5-1914 Harry Elmar married Lily Newman. They had no honeymoon. He continued to still do more to his house for the rest of the year. It was built to a livable stage in time for the wedding. War broke out in Europe 5-8-1914. Cecil left Rockhampton for camp on 29-9-1914. The day after war was declared things were pretty bad at Mt. Morgan as a lot of hands were paid off because of war. Arthur had a shop at Mt.Morgan and found sales stopped on selling fruit and vegetables because so many were paid off. In September Tom was irrigating Lucerne on his farm. Arthur also had irrigation. 16-11-1914 Arthur first started ploughing with a motorised plough. Harry Elmar Johnson built a fowl pen, stable and a paddock on his own land. Charlie Lee gave him two framed pictures for a wedding gift.

Sample page 1-1--: Beals were out for the day. I took a few photos. They said they had a nice time but were out of sorts because Pete would make an early start for home. Lily was out and spent the day with her mother and sister. I took her back with the aid of Toms bike.
-1--: I hoed amongst the youngest lot of pines and also picked a few fruit and tomatoes to take to town tomorrow. The weather is very warm and rubbish is growing rather rapidly.
-1--: Took the first lot of fruit to town they sold all right but I think we are going to have a different job this season to what we had last year.
-1--: Lily was out for the afternoon. I went down to Toms and stayed to tea after which I went to town with her.
-1--: I hoed amongst the pines and picked 10 doz for town tomorrow. The weather is getting hot again. I suppose we will be getting more rain. I went round after tea and developed the photos I took New Years day.
-1--: Cecil and I went to town with 30 doz pines. We had a good day and made 2 /10 per dozen. The weather was so awfully warm that it made our heads ache a good deal.
-1--: I hoed along the pine rows and picked 21 doz pines. The pines are coming in now and I rather fancy they will be a bit plentiful. A very few tomatoes we can rake up now the dry spell w e had just about settled every thing in that line. I suppose it will rain shortly and give us a rough time with pines.
-1--: I arose from my bed at 4.30 and lighted the fire and got ready and helped Cecil load pines and went to town and hawked till about 2 oclock, we had 41 doz and averaged near 2/7 per doz for them. Pines are not in good swing yet.

-1: I knocked about at home and Toms all day. It was a bit warm all right. Mr and Mrs Lawson were down at Toms.
-1-: I started the week with ploughing. The weather was something beastly. It is sunburning pines wholesale. They are a thing that is going to be very plentiful. I have a lot to pick for tomorrow, Cecil has too.
-1-: Arose at 4 o clock and got ready and went to town with pines. It was again an awful day as far as the heat was concerned and a lot of folk thought it necessary to have a go on our run, blow them.
-1-: I horse hoed and ha rrowed and dug about the French beans. I then picked and packed 8 doz pines to forward to C.W. Mother at Clermont. Then I picked 19 doz for town tomorrow. I think we are going to have a stiff time selling them yet. Will be glad when 2 or 3 weeks have pas sed.
-1-: Went to town with pines had a very good day but had to leave a lot of people without as we run out.
-1-: I hoed some land ready to put tomato plants at the first chance and went over my pines and picked 23 dozen. I also had to wash post cards of Eddie etc. The weather is very peculiar, it seems as though it could rain but doesnt come.
-1-: I got up before 5 and got ready and went with pines. We got along very well until we got farther than we went last Saturday, then we had to let them go at 1/6 per doz.
-1-: I went to the city and drove the miss out to her mothers home. It was rather stormy when we were going back.
-1-: I ploughed amongst the bananas and pumpkins and picked 40 doz pines. It was a brutal day as far as the heat was concerned. I felt horrid all day and had a restless night.
