
1-1--: Played cricket all morning, got bitten by a dog where I couldn' t see. In the afternoon I was on the gate at the races. Evening I went to Gracemere & got a dirty beaten at draughts by Morrell lost 7 out of 8 games, will study the game up & go & beat the rascal.
2-1--: Felt a bit stiff after the holiday racket. Tommy Gile & I went to see if the creek had run into the lagoon. Caught over a dozen fish. Chinaman came and caught 3 & I took them from him just for a lark, he didn't like it much, but it 's all in a lifetime. Afternoon went to Church, very poor singing think the choir was too full of ham.
3-1--: Gathered pineapples and other stuff ready for town tomorrow, about 15 dozen pines, 6 melons and a few tomatoes. Went and saw a chow about grapes, think I' ll get some from him and turn them over at a little profit. Fruit very scarce this season.
4-1--: Went to town with pines. One of my school mates was buried used to be Lizzie Presland. I felt a bit weary after my holidays. Hawking is pretty severe on your feet. Bought 50 lbs. grapes from Chow and turned them over for 5/-
5-1--: In the morning worked round the hill. Afternoon went & helped Tom to burn scrub looked a little like rain. Chinaman gave me 2 melons, we sat down under a tree & ate them They went much better than the scrub burning Cannot get on with that all on account of the prickly pear.
6-1--: I was hoeing pines round the hill, came up very like rain. Mother and Laura went to town and to Beals, afraid they will get wet before they get home. I went to town in the afternoon and bought a collar and bow, went to Christian Endeavour in the evening.
7-1--: Planted the sugar cane that Arthur brought home from the Isis scrub. Cecil came home from Brisbane. Laura is upset because, Tommy didn't come.
8-1--: I was digging between the pines all the morning. In the afternoon I went to town and had a game with Jim Emery and Ernie Ward.
9-1--: Went to Church and heard Rev. Shaw preach.
10-1-: Picked pineapples and cased ready for market. Got 20 lbs. grapes from Tommy. There were 15 dozen pines, Cecil sold them for 30 shillings.
11-1-: Put in the day helping Tom to fence. There were some good showers of rain during the day. Ernie went to the police & complained he had his saddle stolen.
12-1-: Planted pea seed & worked with Tom fencing for the day. He now owes me 4 days work. Cecil & I have dug land for pineapples. Some say we are mad for planting so many of them, time will show who is right. I myself am quite willing to wait & see what the future brings forth.
13-1-: It is a showery day and seems as though it may be wet for some time to come. I went to the Chinaman and got the loan of a fork to dig land for pines. The Chinaman gave me about 5 lbs. of splendid grapes. Planted beans round the hill.
14-1-: Cecil and I digging ground.
15-1-: Fooling round and that's a fact.
16-1-: Feeling pretty seedy, reading and writing. Afternoon don't feel like going to Church.
17-1-: Following my usual occupation. Cecil took a load of wood to Mrs. Press. Pulled 14 doz. pines.
18-1-: Went to town with pines, bought a pair of boots Skeene 8/6d. Bought a digging fork for 3/ 6d. Ernie sold over £10 worth of pines.
19-1-: Dug ground it was very hot. I never remember such weather before. Everyone thinks there will be a flood.
20-1-: Hoeing weeds down the track a big storm worked up about 4 o'clock and is raging as I write this.
21-1-: Tremendous storm in the afternoon. I thought it would have been cooler after it, but it is not. Yesterday the Governor came a nd turned the first sod for the Port Alma Railway and also opened the Yeppoon Railway. May Dunn iced Cecils Birthday Cake.
22-1-: Digging. Afternoon I went to Gills and then to the bakery. Jim played E.Ward and myself quiots, we won the game after a hard tussle. In the evening Jim and I went up to Webers and he showed us his violin made by himself.
23-1-: Felt very tired and stiff. Looked a lot like rain and felt terribly close all day. Went to Church Salvation Army.
24-1-: Fencing all day. The weather was fairly cool and Tom and I made good headway. Charley and Cecil dipped the cattle and rounded up the horses for the sale that commences tomorrow. Ernie bought a new saddle for £5.
25-1-: I went to town with pines. Afternoon I helped Tom to fence. Tom went to town at night and I went to Gracemere for a Choral Praise, got 2 punchers in the back wheel of my bike and went to Wards to have them mended.
26-1-: Tom and I finished the fence. I have now helped Tom 6 1/2 days since he has done anything for me, Cecil went to the dairy to help Charley with the milking.
27-1-: I went out to Fishers and had a look at the timber in his paddock. Had my dinner out there, came home and changed my clothes and helped Cecil to get a load of wood, in the evening I took a photo of the hill from the chinamans garden, but it was a duffer.
28-1-: Was a sultry day. I hoed some pig wed, chopped some wood and mowed a lot of rubbish, but am afraid it will come a lot of rain and make the weeds all grow again. Everyone seems to think that there will be a flood. It seems very like it.
29-1-: It rained all day & the wind was awful blew a gale all day. Couldn't get outside the house to do anything. All I did was I planted a mango tree.
30-1-: I found the Custard apple tree all broken down by the wind, rain all day, most miserable day. Creek came down half a banker.
31-1-: In the morning I went down to the paddock & tried to knock some fish & got jolly well sunburnt. Tom & I brought the Disc plow up & in the afternoon we ploughed about 1/2 an acre of ground. I pulled the pines, for town next day.
1-2--: Went to town with pineapples & brought out Arthurs Stump Jack Plow. The river is high if we get more rain it will be a flood.
2-2--: Tom, Cecil & I dug the ground that the plow had missed. In th e afternoon we had a try at getting stumps out with the stump jack. Arthur came down from the Mount in the 4-o'clock train, & he showed us how to work it, we just got into the working of when it was knock off time.
3-2--: I planted pumpkins & sweet potatoes round the hill.
4-2--: We finished digging and cleared land ready for planting pines.
5-2--: All the morning Tom & I were excavating a place to build Cecils hut. Afternoon we went to Greenfel Choir Practice at night.
6-2--: Went and saw the river in the morning. Afternoon went to Church.
7-2--: I hoed the pines, quite enough too.
8-2--: Cecil & I went and had a look at the flood waters, we could not get any further than Nelsons on account of the water over the road. Hoed amongst the pines above the grapes.
9-2--: I got a letter from Arthur about his house blocks. Hoed all day.
10-2-: Went to town with pines, got home at half past 2, had dinner, sharpened the axe and bound the handle, it was an exceedingly hot day. The water over the road at the causeway has gone down greatly.
11-2-: Tom & I had a day in the country. We cut 20 blocks. It was a terribly hot day & in the evening the mosquitoes were awful. I had a lovely bath in the creek. It was about 7.30 when we got home so we had put in a fair day.
12-2-: Tom worked on the excavation for Cecils house all morning. I went to town to get the brakes mended for the dray. I bought a hammer, pair of pinchers, shears and a spring clip. Some fairly heavy rain fell in the afternoon.
13-2-: Went to Church and helped to make an awful mess of an Anthem, no one felt any better for it.
14-2-: Went to Greenfel for house blocks, had an awful job got stuck fast & had to throw off a couple of blocks before the horses could bring us home.
15-2-: Went & brought home the remainder of the house blocks. We made a fair trip of it having a lighter load & the horses pulled much better.
16-2-: I did some excavating & planted some sweet potato cuttings. I also went to town and bought a digging fork for 3/6d and made a deal for 2 shovels for Will Ward.
17-2-: I went to Bill Harveys and pulled 200 pineapple suckers and planted them. Cecil & I played a duet at the C.E.Meeting, some of the members said it went well. It was one out of the Lankeys. Throw out the Life Line.
18-2-: I climbed up an iron bark tree in the garden & cut all the top off, got a bit of a scare too I thought I was going to have an accident.
19-2-: I was minding the gate at the races. It was a very muggy day and some showers of rain fell during the afternoon.
20-2-: Was a fairly sultry day and I did not go out.
21-2-: Squared out Cecils hut, planted some cowpea and sweet potatoes. It was a very muggy day and seems as though it might come a lot of rain. Cecil was shifting manure.
22-2-: I did very little. Planted 4 rows peas & sunflower seeds. Played Cecil draughts, beat him by 1 game.
23-2-: I went to Zimitats and pulled 300 pineapple suckers. Dug 4 holes for Cecils hut. In the afternoon I was working at different jobs.
24-2-: I have been planting pineapple suckers all day long, it was rather hot. Cecil went to town for timber. Mother and Laura went to Beals. The number of Pineapples round the hill now is 2,600.
25-2-: Finished planting the suckers Went to town in the evening and had a fair time.
26-2-: I helped Arthur with his house, in the evening I went to Saycos and took 1 photo.
27-2-: Went to the Junior Annual the Church was packed and a lot were outside the building.
28-2-: Was an awfully hot day and came to a cooler condition in the night, nothing extraordinary happened and I just did my general work.
1-3--: Followed my usual occupation.
2-3--: It was a very hot day, I did some hoeing and made a three-legged chair. Mother likes sitting on it she says it rests her legs.
3-3--: I worked in the garden all day and went to the C.E. meeting in the evening.
4-3--: Cecil and I hoed amongst the pines.
5-3--: Cecil and I went and cut a load of wood for Mrs. press in the morning. In the afternoon I went to Gracemere and played Morrel draughts, he won 4 games, to my 2. Planted tomato seed.
6-3--: Was a wet day and none of our folk went to Church, although both the Army and C. E. held services
7-3--: The surveyor came to survey the hill. I took a load of firewood to Mrs Press, got back home about 1 o'clock. In the afternoon I did a little to forward the erection of Cecils shanty. After tea Cecil and I played draughts, about 9 games I think must have been played 2 or 3 were drawn and I lost by 1 game.
8-3--: Was rather a wet day. I put some sunflower seed in and transplanted some plants. I also did a little to Cecils hut. After tea Cecil & I played draughts about 19 games he beat me by 7 games. I am dead off lately and Cecil doesn' t seem to miss a thing.
9-3--: I have been working at Cecils hut besides doing various othe r small jobs. I cannot get on with the building at all as Cecil is working with the surveyors. They are making a hash of things & no mistake. The roof was put on Toms house today. Draughts Myself 11 Cecil 10 (2 draws)
10-3-: I beat Cecil at draughts by 1 game.
11-3-: Cecil beat me by 4 or 5 games of draughts.
12-3-: Little Ernie & I put the roof on the place round the hill. The surveyors finished the survey of the hill. Cecil & I went to Choir practice & had a jolly good sing. It has been a horrible week because of rain.
13-3-: Went to Church at Gracemere and to the Baptist church at night. Jim and Art. Emery was with me.
14-3-: I went and got Duke and took pumpkins and suckers to the station for Arthur. I planted cow- pea seed and banked sweet spuds. I also pulled a lot of weeds out of the pines. Cecil is still crook from Sunday his horse kicked him.
15-3-: Gathered pumpkins in the morning also sowed more cowpea seed and pea seed, also everything is looking splendid round the hill. Mother has gone to the farm with Ted to dye dresses.
16-3-: I planted a few suckers and helped to cut a load of wood in the afternoon. I was squaring the post of the shanty round the hill, Cecil took the wood and brought out the iron for the walls. It is very close weather t his week and seems like a lot more rain.
17-3-: Cecil and I worked at the hut. Arthur and Lois Phillips came down from the Mount. Laura has done a get somewhere.
18-3-: It has been a terribly wet day. The creek has come down this evening. The wind is blowing a hurricane. We have had rain every week lately. I planted a peach tree &12 tomatoes round the hill. Cecil beat me at draughts 2 by 6 games.
19-3-: Was a wet day and I could do very little work. The creek rose to a greater height than it had been all the wet season.
20-3-: The water was about 18 inches over the bridge. Tom and I went to Newmans and it rained all the time we were coming home.
21-3-: Tom & I was shifting & fixing the dairy furniture, Ernie was with us. Later in the day I did a little to my hut. Charlie & his lads are living up here. Cecil is helping to milk. Ada & the twins are in town.
22-3-: Tom helped me to put the verandah on my hut. Cecil threw a lot of soil inside the hut to level the floor. Tom & I are building a W.C. At the tim e I am writing this Fred Ward and Vivian Brown are lying on the kitchen floor trying to get a little sleep.
23-3-: I finished making the doors for my hut. In the evening Cecil & I went to Mrs Wards for singing practice. F & R Emery was there. When we went up to Emerys Cecil & I amused the family a little by relating hair breath escapes he and I have had.
24-3-: Went to town with C Thorsen & as there was no trains running on account of the floods I had to stay in town over-night. I speculated a bob at the dread nought store. I was at the street meeting, heard Mr. Robertson sing a solo.
25-3-: I spent most of the day in town at the Convention of the Christian Endeavour union. The river was very high. The usual train didn't run so Sayces and Cecil and myself had to stay in town all night.
26-3-: I hung the doors of my hut. Tommy Gill helped me. Went to wards for tea and had practice at night.
27-3-: Mr. Press occupied the pulpit. I took the phonograph to Wards and Frank and Emma Weber came out and we had a splendid evening.
28-3-: Sent the subscription to Evangelists. Cecil went to the Baptist picnic. I stopped home and painted the outside of my hut. I went up to Wards for tea and took some records up with me. I also run them over at Emerys. Posted a letter to Herby Oppermann yesterday
29-3-: I did some painting and also a good bit of hoeing. The water is so high at the causeway that Charley could not get his cows across. I intend to go and take a photo of the water this evening. The twins are rolling all over the place.
30-3-: I did some painting and put in a fairly solid time hoeing. The water at the causeway was too high for the milk to be taken across. We have had a terrible time of it.
31-3-: I hoed 2 rows of pines on my place, Cecil did the same. I went up to Emerys with Cecil for endeavour, but when it came to the time for the meeting I stayed drinking and got into a big row.
1-4--: I hoed a row of pines and planted about 50 suckers. It is now 1 o'clock and I am going to help Tom to fence this afternoon. The milk cart went across the water this morning, the first time since it has been up.
2-4--: I was hoeing all the morning. There was no Choir practice on account of Mrs. Ward being unwell. I got the phonograph from Emerys.
3-4--: Mr.Robertson preached and also sang a solo for collection.
4-4--: I finished hoeing the pines on my place and then Cecil and I commenced fixing the fence. Went to Bible in State School league social in the evening and walked home with R and F. Emery. The social was a grand success.
5-4--: Tom & I were running barbwire all morning. In the afternoon I planted pineapples. It was a wet day but very little rain fell. It was rather cool in the early part of the morning, but became close in the latter part of the day.
6-4--: I helped Tom to fence, we used all the barbwire we had. I came home & lit the fire to boil the kettle for dinner.
7-4--: I worked in the garden and didn't like it much.
8-4--: Cecil and I went to the C.E. meeting and sang a duet.
9-4--: I hoed a row of pines and went to town about half past 10 to get window panes came home just in time for tea and went to Choir practice.
10-4-: Went to Dunbars farewell service. In the evening we went to a Baptist service. 8 were baptised.
11-4-: I put the windowpanes in my window and worked in the garden. Cecil and I also cut a load of logs for Gills.
12-4-: I helped Cecil off with the load of logs and came and put three panes in the kitchen window. In the afternoon Tom and I hoed amongst the pines. I took 2 photos of Cecil but they neither of them good.
13-4-: Tom and I carted sand all the morning and in the afternoon, Cecil, Tom & I went to Gracemere & voted for the bibles in State Schools and Archer.
14-4-: I have been humping sand & water to make concrete for the floor of my hut. Laura, Tom and Cecil have gone to C.E.. I stopped home taking out photos and run phonograph for Mrs. Press.
15-4-: I put the floor in my hut. N.B. The floor was not a good one. I worked in the garden. Cecil was hoeing.
16-4-: I made a bench for the butchers shop. Cecil went to town & fixed things up the estate and other things for killing next week.
17-4-: I spent the day at Beals came back about 5 and fed Ernies pigs, went to Emerys after tea.
18-4-: Excavating.
19-4-: Excavating & other things.
20-4-: Fixing up for market on Saturday.
21-4-: I put the steps in position temporary so other people can get up to the house
22-4-: I did a little excavating. Helped Cecil to kill our first beast for the season. It was rather warm for the time of the year, things have dried up very quickly. We heard that Emerys were going from Gracemere next Wednesday.
23-4-: Cecil & I went to the market with the meat. We had a fairish bit of meat left, the market was rather dull.
24-4-: Was the C. E. anniversary. We did pretty well collection £1-9-1d.
25-4-: Helped Cecil to cut Mrs. Press load of wood.
26-4-: Gardening.
27-4-: Hoeing round the hill. Went to the send off to Mr. Emery at the School of Arts. The presents were to Mrs. Emery Tea Set. Mr. Emery Writing Cabinet, Brief Bag, and a Walking stick.
28-4-: I hoed a little and cut wood for the house. In the afternoon I went and helped Tom to inject pear.
29-4-: Cecil & I killed our second beast for the season.
30-4-: Went to the market. We made nearly £6 for our beef. In the afternoon I went with Tommy to see the road race. After the race, we went to see Eddie Pilkingtons place.
1-5--: Mr. Youngman preached his first sermon at Gracemere, after a lapse of many years.
2-5--: Morning I went with Tommy to town & witnessed the procession, it was the first of it's kind that I have seen and was very fair. It is hot & sultry for this time of the year, rain would be very acceptable.
3-5--: I injected prickly pear all the morning and in the afternoon until 3 o'clock. From 3 Cecil & I picked between 30 & 40 pound of Rosellas. Cecil has gone shooting. Laura is writing to Ada Fisher. Mother is making a counterpane for my bed.
4-5--: I finished injecting the pear. Cecil went to town with pines and rosellas. The invitation for Toms wedding came today. I pruned the peach tree and also a lemon and mandarin tree in the fowl run. I then went to my place and did some hoeing.
5-5--: I set fire to the grass on the hill and hoed some weeds near the pines. Mother and Laura went to town. It is rather warm but doesn't seem much like rain. I oiled the Phaeton.
6-5--: I spent all the morning poking round and cutting wood. It is very hot today. Cecil and I picked the rosellas they are covered with aphids. They are very cheap, the beggars are not really worth growing.
7-5--: Cecil & I were at the market & got our cart saddle. We heard the King had died at midnight. Went up to Wards and had tea went to Choir practice and helped to do some roaring.
8-5--: I went to Sayces and came back to Ernies for dinner I did not go to Church.
9-5--: I put the canvas on my stretcher & made my table, which took all morning. In the afternoon I did some hoeing. Aldridge owes 2/ 6d for Pie melons and is very long winded in the matter.
10-5-: I hoed in the morning. In the afternoon I went down to Tom seeking wood. After tea I went down to Toms and helped to make a cupboard. I slept with him, we did not get to bed until close on 11 o'clock.
11-5-: I had to help Cecil off to town with pines also Mother and Laura had to be assisted off to town. When they went I found the puncture in my bike and I sawed a gatepost. Winter seems to be coming in, it is quite chilly this morning. I have just finished my lovely dinner. Arthur and Charley have gone to Reids Sale at Pandora.
12-5-: I commenced digging between the pines. After dinner I had to go to the dairy for 2 ponies to fetch Cecil from the station.
13-5-: Cecil & I killed & got everything ready for market.
14-5-: Went to the market. In the afternoon went to the races.
15-5-: Went to Church. The Rev Whyte preached. Mrs. Ward and Mrs. Jones sang a duet.
16-5-: I put the affair in the corner of my shanty to keep my clothes in. Mother went to the farm, Laura is washing and Cecil is injecting.
17-5-: I was digging between my pines there are a lot of them drying out. In the evening I went to the yearly meeting of the trustees of the W.P. Church.
18-5-: I went to the city and put 1 dozen plates in my camera at the room of the Rockhampton C.Church. In the afternoon I went to Toms wedding and took 2 photos of the wedding cake. I have not taken them out yet but hope that they will be good ones.
19-5-: I am not feeling so fresh on it after the wedding, it was rather late when I got to bed. I finished felling the pears in the corner near Thorsens and injected them. It is very warm for this season.
20-5-: Busy killing all day for the market.
20-5-: Cecil and I were busy all day killing for Market.
21-5-: Went to the market.
22-5-: Went to Church at Gracemere also in town.
23-5-: Injecting pear and clearing manure away from the killing pen. It is very windy and rough seems like rain.
24-5-: I pulled 13 doz. pines after that I had a shave and went to the Baptist picnic at Kabra. In the evening I went to Mr.Jones at Boongary and spent an enjoyable time. Ethel Sayces was there also and W.McKenzie.
25-5-: I was at Jones all the morning, after dinner I came home the roads were very dusty and in some places very rough. I heard of Miss M Webers death. I cleaned around the killing yard. I have such a crook finger that I can scarcely hold my pen.
26-5-: I have been digging between my pines. Mother and Laura went to the funeral, it is very much like rain. Mr. Sayce is rather bad he seems to be falling away to a mere shadow.
27-5-: We killed a steer & a vealer. We were making sausages until 8 o'clock in the evening.
28-5-: Went to the market & sold completely out before dinnertime.
29-5-: Went to the Baptist church.
30-5-: I dug between the pines round the hill. Mr and Mrs Beal came out and think a great improvement, most is to be noticed in the various places. Went to a C.E.Social at the Baptist church in the evening, had a nice time.
31-5-: It seems to have set in for a pretty good rain, it is to be hoped it will fine up for the Carnival. It is very cold rain, I am going to write a letter to my grandmother.
1-6--: I was working on my place, lost 1/2 crown in the grass.
2-6--: I fixed a tank stand and set a lemon tree.
3-6--: I sowed 4 rows of peas and helped Cecil to kill.
4-6--: I was stationed at the members gate at the races.
5-6--: Went to Church at Gracemere & the Baptist in town. Cecil, & Eddie Newman were baptised.
6-6--: I was at the races all day.
7-6--: I was doing little jobs all the morning, in the afternoon I took things easy.
8-6--: I was at the races all day.
9-6--: I finished digging out the pines on my place and planted some of them.
10-6-: I finished planting the pines and helped to kill the beast for Market.
11-6-: Went to the Market and did not have a very good day.
12-6-: I went to the Baptist Church, Eddie Newman & I collided & I got 4 spokes out of the front wheel of my bike.
13-6-: I have a nasty cold, I planted a mulberry tree that Mr. Newman gave me and dug some holes for other trees. I sunk a hole to put a gatepost hole in. Cecil & I wasted a bit of time over the spouting.
14-6-: I fixed the spouting so that the water would run into the top of the tank. I had to make a hole in the top to make a fall. I also finished planting a row of pines that I had to knock out.
15-6-: I went to town and got some medicine for my cold. I paid Bachere for the trousers. Went with Arthur Emery to the old peoples place first time I have been there. Emery was fencing the fowls out. A jockey named Davis shot a girl and man in William St reet. The girl died instantaneously.
16-6-: I took my gate posts around and did some hoeing, also started to make the drain to let the water run off the pines in the wet season. It is very warm for the time of the year and looks like rain.
17-6-: Killed our beast for market. The paper says that it is going to rain. Last Wednesday I posted the Returns for income tax.
18-6-: I got some trees from Mrs. King I don't know whether they are lemon or orange trees. Went to Morrells to attend a committee meeting with regard to Emerys send off. We had to dub in 1/- each, as we were that amount short.
19-6-: Was a very unsettled day and none of us went to church.
20-6-: I did some digging amongst my pines and put in a gatepost. It was very warm for the time of year and very much like rain.
21-6-: I was working round at my own place at various kinds of work; in the evening I went to hear Mr.Porter at the Baptist Church. Mr Shaw an old gent and myself were the only ones available to commence a short prayer meeting, others turned up after.
22-6-: I finished planting a row of pines and took down the old gate and bridge opposite Thorsens. In the evening I again went to the mission. I was very late, the service was about half over when I got there.
23-6-: I just did a few odd jobs. Mother and Laura went to town. It came on to rain after tea and Cecil and I could not go to the C.E. Meeting.
24-6-: Has opened up a wet day, it rained a great deal during the night.
25-6-: Cecil & I went to Market it was very hot day, but we sold out pretty well. I went to Kings and got a mango tree and planted it in the same day. I also ordered an iron gate.
26-6-: I went to Church at Gracemere and to the Baptist in the evening.
27-6-: I planted 1 lb. of French bean seeds and hoed a piece of land ready for the plough. I had a good deal of trouble of fitting the shear on to the plough.
28-6-: I helped Cecil to dig ground for pines until 10 o'clock, and then went to the dairy for Dolly. I washed the cans so that Viny could go for her, but he couldn't find her, so I had to come home without her. I dug between 1 row of pines.
29-6-: Yesterday Fred Ward brought us sugar and flour and some groceries from Denham Bros. I helped Cecil off with a load of wood and brought Duke up. Tom helped me to do a b it of ploughing. Developed 2 photos of my pineapples one of them came out very well.
30-6-: I helped Tom to saw down a tree, took us about 2 1/2 hours. In the afternoon I went to the Junior picnic and had a fairly good time. In the evening I went to Endeavour. Mr. Bunnage rendered his resignation which was accepted.
1-7--: I started on my account.
2-7--: Went to the Market with Cecil. Got measured for a suit, ordered a pair of boots and a Panama hat. Bought a bag of seed spuds. I want to set them tomorrow.
3-7--: Ethel Sayer ordered 6 of the photos I took at the picnic.
4-7--: Morning I planted 5 rows of spuds. Sent Arthur 11 large pines and 10 small ones and 1 doz. and 3 from this place. Cecil is down at the dairy because Charley is sick.
5-7--: I sold Tom 2/- worth of seed potatoes and mixed a kerosene tin full of pear Poison. I used 1 lb. of caustic Soda half of Cyanide and 1 of Arsenic.
6-7--: Was an unsettled day. I fixed the spouting round at the back of my hut, and hoed amongst the pines. Cecil has b een milking for Charley all the week and has gone down again this evening. I tried to print some post cards of the picnic but they are no good.
7-7--: I hoed a lot of the thistles from amongst the pines and finished Ethel Sayces photos of the picnic.
8-7--: Killed and got ready for Market.
9-7--: Went to Market. Got a pair of boots and a Panama hat. Bought a sickle and mattock and a hoe and handle for Cecil. Cecil went to drill and I drove the cart home.
10-7-: I went to the Church parade at the Campbell Street Methodist. Spent the rest of the day at Kings.
11-7-: I dug between the pines where the tomatoes were and hoed another row, pruned the grape vine on the house and injected some prickly pear with some eradicator that I made myself. Mrs. Cook and her d aughter Fanny were here, for a few hours and said that they had had an enjoyable time, we sent them on their way rejoicing, with a bunch of roses.
12-7-: I dug between the pines and hoed a row. I also went to the scrub and got a couple of handles for a ho e and mattock. The Choir has altered its night of practice and tonight is its first practice under the new arrangements. We are holding a meeting next month when the moon is good. Mr. Jones and I are to sing a duet. Cecil, Ernie and I a trio.
13-7-: It is very warm for the time of the year. I have done a good bit of hoeing this week. This morning I hoed a row of thistles. Tried to burn the grass off but it is too green on account of not having any frost to kill it.
14-7-: I hoed a row of pines and burnt off some grass. In the afternoon I helped Tom to cut a log in halves and roll it to a stump. Went to C.E. and helped Cecil to sing a duet.
15-7-: Killing day killed a bullock & a vealer.
16-7-: I got my suit. Got word that my gate has come up and is at Burns and Twiggs It is very much like rain.
17-7-: Was a wet day, couldn't go out. Arthur came down and brought Violet. Gave Arthur £2 on my clothes.
18-7-: Tom helped me to clear and dig near my hut. Mother went to stay at Mrs. press. Seems as though we are going to have some winter at last.
19-7-: I went to town to get poison to make prickly pear eradicator for Arthur. I paid 2/5 d. for poison. Took 2 tins of Mothers Caustic Soda. I also planted a rose tree. This morning was frosty and quite a cold snap.
20-7-: Digging and helped Tom half a day.
21-7-: Hung my gate & dug ground.
22-7-: Killing day. I paid Arthur £3 and now owe him 3/6d.
23-7-: Went to Market. Paid for my gate from Burns & Twiggs. In the afternoon I went and took Duncan and little boys photo and Morrells house, he wouldn't keep still so I didn't do too good. We had a bullock and 2 vealers at the Market.
24-7-: Went to Church at Gracemere and Baptist Church. Newmans for tea & went to town with Lily Newman.
25-7-: I was digging ground and burning off grass. Sold Fred Ward the rifle I got from Ernie.
26-7-: I was digging ground and burning stumps. I sent to Harringtons for a dark room lamp and Album.
27-7-: Gardening. Johnsons pines are best.
28-7-: I was hoeing and went to town and got some mounts and went to Press and saw Mother. I got a lb. of beans and came home and planted them.
29-7-: Killing day.
30-7-: Market Day. Went to town in the afternoon and took photos. I have a rough leaf pine that weighs 4 3/4 lbs. the largest one of its kind that I have seen.
31-7-: I was at Church both Gracemere and Baptist. Mr. Truman helped with the Anthem.
1-8--: I hoed a little and chopped off the stump near my hut, it was very tough. I dug 2 holes for my shed.
2-8--: I planted 2 short rows of pines and went to town and got 5 teeth extracted.
3-8--: I am not feeling too good my mouth is very sore, and it is too windy to be outside.
4-8--: Gardening.
5-8--: Killing Day.
7-8--: Went to Church 3 times and the Mission once.
8-8--: I was digging between the bottom row of pines and the next one to it. It seems a lot like rain. Went to the Mission.
9-8--: I hoed thistles and went round to Sayces and Bunnages and got paid for photos. I went to town early in the evening had my tea at the New Chums place, went to the Nicholson Hemming Mission meeting.
10-8-: Hoeing all day went to the Mission at night, the choir is growing larger each evening.
11-8-: I finished the top lot of pines and started hoeing with a pronged hoe, between the English potatoes. Mum and Laura have gone to the city. Cecil gone after vealers. It blows like rain . Mission too.
12-8-: We killed 2 bullocks and 1 vealer. Made over 100 lbs. Sausages..
13-8-: Went to the Market, and came home and got ready and went back to the Mission. Went to Maskells for tea, went to meeting at night.
14-8-: I was attending the mission all the afternoon. Went to the Hartley Memorial Church.
15-8-: I pulled 3 dozen pines. One weighed 5 1/ 8 lbs & another not quite 5 lbs. I hoed between the beans. I went to town early. Tommy and I went to Laceys and got some lozenges and had tea, then went to the Mission. The Choir had its photo taken. I hope it is a good one.
16-8-: I pulled my beans and hoed between the pines. Went to the Mission. Walked home with 4 young ladies. Cecil was passed into Lodge.
17-8-: I went and got Duke and carted 550 pineapple suckers from Ernies place, I got finished by half past 12
18-8-: I went with Arthur to see the line for the fence I have to put up. Tom and I planted about 500 pineapples. I went to Harry Schirmans place and took a photo of Lena and also a big load of hay . Lena came out fairly well. The other is a poor one. I sent 14/- worth of pines to Thomson 6 1/2 dozen.
19-8-: Killing Day. Yesterday I bought a rifle from Arthur for £1.
20-8-: Bought camera half plate.
21-8-: Went to the Mission twice. Gave 1/- towards the subscription for Nicholson and Hemming.
22-8-: I trimmed the pines, pulled beans and took a photo with my half plate Camera. It would have been a good one I think if it had been properly developed. Went to the last meeting of the N.H.Mission, the School of Arts was packed.
23-8-: I worked all day with Tom fencing. Arthur came down about 4 & worked until 5.15. It was a hot day. I am suffering from a rather sever cold. Cecil and Bill Maskel are doing a bit of work.
24-8-: I worked with Tom all day. It was very hot. I have a horrible cold and makes it worse getting hot and cold, is bad very bad. Cecil bought me a dish and broke it just as he got home.
25-8-: I worked with Arthur all day.
26-8-: Tom & I finished clearing the track for the fence. I now owe Arthur £1-0-6d.
27-8-: Tom and I split posts. In the afternoon Tom Gill and I went to Harry Schirmers and took photos with both Cameras. In the evening I went to the Congregation Church to attend a meeting of the H .N. Choir. We decided to make the Choir a permanent one. Mr. C. Woods was elected Conductor.
28-8-: Went to Church, Bongers, Went to H. N. Church at night with Mrs. Press.
29-8-: Worked for Arthur all day. At night I developed 2 of the photos that Tommy took on Saturday.1 was under exposed, but the other is very good. It was a good deal like rain today, but none has fallen. Killed a large carpet snake.
30-8-: I sunk 10 holes & put 10 posts in for Arthur. Came home for dinner, o n my way home I shot a sparrow hawk with my new rifle. I pulled 8 1/ 2 lbs. of French beans and 2 1/ 2 doz pines. Bill Maskel & I put in 2 posts for a shed in my place. It has been showering lightly all the afternoon.
31-8-: I worked for Arthur all day. Tom shot a big black snake. This afternoon we put in 13 posts & 1 strainer. It was a very cloudy and muggy day. When we were on our way home I shot a half grown wallaby with Toms gun, I gave it to him. I printed a photo of Harry Schirmers load of hay, it makes a very good post card. Tommy Gill took the photo and I developed it.
1-9--: I worked for Arthur all day. Tom & I brought the wire from the station.
2-9--: Tom & I cut 44 posts out of the old fence at the bottom of the farm. I only worked for Arthur in the morning. After dinner I worked on my own place pulling Peas, Beans, Tomatoes & Pines. It is very warm but clear.
3-9--: I went to the Railway Picnic & had a very enjoyable time. 2 trains were absolutely packed. I was down the street last night and bought a packet of Seltona P. C. from Roberts Pawnbroker.
4-9--: I went to Church at Gracemere and the Baptist Church in Rockhampton.
5-9--: Tom & I put in 23 posts, it was a very hot day. This is the third week that we have been fencing & both of us are heartily sick of it. I reckon we will be at it all next week. I printed 10 post cards of Harry Schirmers load of Lucerne.
6-9--: I worked for Arthur all day. The heat was a scorcher. We put in 24 posts & dug a hole for the strainer. We have about 1 doz posts & 2 gateposts to put in now. Mother has gone to the Rainbow Fair. I shot a Blue Mountain Parrot.
7-9--: Tom & I have finished putting in the posts of our fence & also sunk 2 gatepost holes. In the afternoon we bored 2 thirds of the first line. It was t errible hot. Arthur came down from the Mount. Ernie, Cecil and Laura and Eddie went to Choir practice. Gracemere is about cooked as far as singing is concerned.
8-9--: I worked half a day for Arthur. I sent him 4/6d. worth of pines. I took 3 snap shots of the pines 1 with Bill Maskel in it came out fair.
9-9--: I worked all morning on the fence. I came home for dinner feeling crook. Tom stayed behind boring holes in the posts. It is very hot weather seems like a drought. The Chinaman gave me 4 lemons because I told him I was sick.
10-9-: I went to Rockhampton in the morning and stayed all day. I went to the Botanical Gardens and took photos but they did not come out too good.
11-9-: I went to Gracemere Church and Hartley Memorial in the evening.
12-9-: Tom & I spent the day wiring our fence. The heat was something blazing. We can do hardly anything, but drink. We killed a big black snake. Rover found it, it was a venomous one.
13-9-: Tom & I fenced all day, got down as far as the corner. It was a cloudy muggy day. We had a nice storm this morning. It was like rain most of the day, but has cleared off although it is lightening now and then.
14-9-: Was a wet day. I pulled and put into cases 4/- worth of pines for Arthur. I hoed a place to finish planting a row of pine suckers. I have some-thing the matter with my nose I can hardly make out what it is. A nasty discharge comes from it. There is n doubt we are having lovely rain.
15-9-: Tom and I were digging in my garden. We dug around the papaw trees, and also round the Mulberry tree. Tom worked with me only in the afternoon.
16-9-: In the morning Tom & I hoed a patch near the place I am going to build a shed. We got a good start at digging it and then came home for our dinner. Arthur owes me
17-9-: I fini shed digging the piece of ground that Tom & I was at yesterday. I went to town early in the afternoon, I called at Kings and then went round to Gills. Tommy and I called at Rawkins on our way home.
18-9-: I was at Church at Gracemere, service at night, nice little gathering.
19-9-: Tom & I put a day in at the fence. It was a scorcher as far as the heat goes, & we did not get on too good. Will Maskell started to work for me. Mrs. Weber is here for a couple of days.
20-9-: Tom, Bill Maskell & I spent the day fencing. We finished the line & have just to fix up the gullies & a few odd places. I shot an iguana & a snake. Tom got 2 big black snakes, they were playing with each other. Tom settled them.
21-9-: I was hoeing. It was rather warm and seems a little like rain.
22-9-: I commenced excavating & then turned it over to Bill.
23-9-: I hoed a row of pines and had a pretty good bush fire on the hill. In the afternoon I helped Cecil. I went to town in the evening. Tommy and I went down the street there was a fair attendance ring. Canning sang a solo.
24-9-: It is very windy, cloudy day and all being well I am going up to the Mount. Was at the sale of property at Gordons paddock.
25-9-: I spent the day at Mt. Morgan. It was a muggy day.
26-9-: I came down from the Mount in the 3 o'clock train and pulled French beans.
27-9-: Was a semi-wet day, but I hoed a row of pines and run a couple of wires for the Passion fruit on. Bill didn't come out.
28-9-: I hoed and dug ground. I took a couple of photos of my place. Mr. Archer came to see me about prickly pear eradicator. I promised to write him out the recipe.
29-9-: I was hoeing in my garden. Bill Maskell finished excavating.
30-9-: I finished hoeing and helped Cecil in the afternoon. Wrote out the recipe for prickly pear eradicator for R.S.Archer.
1-10-: I went to town and did a little business. It was very hot and my bike cost me 1/6d to get it right.
2-10-: Went to Fishers in the morning and stayed for dinner and came back to church.
3-10-: Bill and I hoed in the morning. In the afternoon I went to town for timber. It was very hot a scorcher. Last Friday I posted a letter to Herby Oppermann.
4-10-: I helped Bill to hoe & did a little towards the erection of my shed. Cecil & Charley trucked horses to the Mount for Arthur. Laura is in town at Presses place for a week.
5-10-: Gardening. Mr. Archer didn't send for the recipe. I suppose he thinks I did not want him to have it.
6-10-: Bill and I grubbed out the lantana and saplings along the bottom of my place.
7-10-: I hoed a little and burnt rubbish. Bill helped Cecil to kill & make sausages.
8-10-: I was not very well and did not do much. I was at Toms for tea and played 3 games of Fox and Geese.
9-10-: Was a muggy day and I stayed home.
10-10: Morning I dug a good piece of ground.
11-10: I went to town to Toms & got the Stump Jack. I went to Mrs Bunnages Funeral.
12-10: Bill & I used the Stump Jack.
13-10: Bill & I got out a few stumps with the Jack.
14-10: Morning I shifted 25 loads of soil and cleaned my bike. Wrote to Taylor and Colledge.
15-10: I went to the Mount in the morning & back on the night train.
16-10: I went to Gracemere Church and the Baptist also Earls Court.
17-10: I dug a row of pines and wheeled a good load of soil. I also went to town and bought a paintbrush. I went back to town after tea. Endeavour meeting at the Baptist Church.
18-10: I painted round at Ernies. I went to a social round at the Baptist Church at night.
19-10: Painting at Ernies.
20-10: Painting Ernies shed. it was rather warm. Ernie has a young German working for him.
21-10: I finished painting, got paid so ended the job. I went to town just before dinner as far as Mrs. Allens shop, sold her my tomatoes at 2d. per lb. I made Mrs Zimitat angry because I sang out as I went p ast her. I took 2 photos in the evening Ernie's house and Mothers.
22-10: Annie Beal and Miss .E. Robertson came out and stayed the night. I took 2 photos of them. They said that they had enjoyed themselves splendidly, when they went home tomorrow. I went with them, I took a couple of photos of the twins.
23-10: The visitors and Cecil and I went round the farm and dairy. I took the girls home in the afternoon.
24-10: I was hoeing my garden it was very hot in the middle of the day and stayed in the house until 3 o'clock. Bill Maskell went to the funeral of Lacys son Bertie.
25-10: I worked in my garden & did a little to my shed. It was very hot.
26-10: I knocked my dark room to pieces & stacked to put it up again round at my own place.
27-10: I was working at the dark room.
28-10: I had to help with the butchering.
29-10: Went to the City Market. In the evening I took May Dunn and Gwenny Stewarts photos.
30-10: Tom and I went to Fairy Bower brought back a bunch of bananas.
31-10: I have been printing post cards and lining the dark room. It is nearly half past 5 now and has come on muggy and smoky. It has been thundering out in the west.
1-11-: I did a little to the dark room, and poked around the garden.
2-11-: I did some digging for pines and making a place for a few bananas.
3-11-: I was home in the morning and did a little digging for bananas. Afternoon I slept all the time.
4-11-: Killing day.
5-11-: Market Day.
6-11-: Wet day. Down at Toms 3 times.
7-11-: Was stormy. I went to the dairy for milk and bread. Finished Gwenny Stewarts Post Cards, and planted pumpkins, which Tom gave me.
8-11-: I planted a few pea seeds.
9-11-: I put out a few rosella plants and sowed a few bean seed.
10-11: Mr & Mrs Newman, Tom & Daisy & Rosie Newman & 3 Sierups, Laura, Eddie & I went to Fairy Bower for a picnic. We found the flying foxes camp & shot 40 or 50 of them. It came on to rain & so we had to leave.
11-11: Killing Day.
12-11: Market Day.
13-11: I never went out.
14-11: I dug new land for pines it was all pick work and gave me beans. It is very windy weather just now and seems like more rain. I gathered a few tomatoes. In the evening I developed May Dunns photos not too good.
15-11: I finished digging the land for pines, as it was rather dry I had to give it best.
16-11: I dug weed with the pronged hoe.
17-11: I went over to Beals & got 200 pineapple suckers & a coconut plant, 1 Apple tree, Cherry trees and Papaws.
18-11: I planted nearly all the suckers and went to town for tea. Went down the street with Tommy. Laura, and May came into town and we had refreshments at the Geisha.
19-11: I gathered tomatoes and dug some weeds out, I also sent to Sydney for a phonograph.
20-11: Went to Church at Gracemere and the Baptist in town.
21-11: I hoed amongst the pines and gathered tomatoes. The weather is horribly hot. I sent a kerosene tin of tomatoes to Allens.
22-11: I hoed a little this morning. It is still awfully hot. Ada Fisher has been here and just gone up to the school to teach sewing. Mother came home from the Mount by the 8-o'clock train.
23-11: I hoed a little, I knocked off about 8 o'clock and came in to have a shave and clean my Bike ready to go to town to see about my teeth.
24-11: I was hoeing in my garden. It was awfully hot. I couldn't work from 9 till 4.
25-11: I worked in the garden in the morning. In the afternoon I did nothing. I went to town to see the Dentist, and stayed in for the evening. I had a lemon squash and Sarsparilla with ice cream.
26-11: I hoed between a row of pines. Yesterday a tremor of earthquake was felt in Rockhampton.
27-11: When we got up this morning, the creek was very nearly a banker. It still seems like rain, so none of us went to Church.
28-11: I planted out a row of passion fruit. The land was nice and wet, we having been favoured with splendid rain. I also dug round the pumpkins.
29-11: I hoed and dug ground for suckers in the morning. After dinner I went to the farm and pulled a couple of 100 pineapple suckers and came home and took a photo of my pines and of the Chows grapes from the hill.
30-11: I went to the farm and got the suckers and picked a kerosene tin of tomatoes. It was very hot, I think we will get more rain. I sent Arthur a dozen and a half of pines for 4/ 6d
1-12-: I am planting the pineapples suckers. The heat is fairly scorching. I have about 4,700 pines now. There is a lot dying out I think they have some sort of disease amongst them.
2-12-: I finished putting in the suckers Ted gave me. After dinner I went to Rockhampton & got my teeth. Tom Johnson, Tommy Gill & I went down town & filled ourselves with all sorts of good things & we were speaking to Amelia Earl.
3-12-: I have been hoeing, it is fairly warm.
4-12-: Tom & I went to Church it was the Salvation Army.
5-12-: I picked pines & tomatoes & cased them up for Arthur.
6-12-: Went with Jim to the station with pines etc.
7-12-: I hoed amongst the pines & cut down a Blood wood & an Iron bark tree.
8-12-: I hoed amongst the pines. It has been very hot all the week and I think we will be having more rain very shortly. It will most likely be a wet Xmas.
9-12-: I have been hoeing and went to Toms, took back his axe and helped him to fix his bike seat the jolly thing will wobble about. We had a visit from the Salvation Army Officer after good cheer for the time.
10-12: I hoed the remainder of the last row of old weeds. It was very close & is now just the picture of rain. I fixed a letter to Herby.
11-12: Was a wet day, and there was no service at Gracemere, although Bongers came out.
12-12: I picked 10 doz. pines & cased them up, also 1 case of tomatoes. In the afternoon I dug a bit of ground. It was very stormy in the night.
13-12: Morning I went with Tom up to the station with produce. I received a letter from Jeff Headrick & Coy about the Phonograph & Records. It is very hot & close. Posted a letter to Herby.
14-12: I did a little hoeing, but it was so awfully hot that I could hardly do anything at all, everybody seems knocked out with the heat.
15-12: I hoed around the pumpkins, I was also trying to catch some fish, but those that I caught were too small to be of any use. I went to the Church of England Meeting & had a bit of a sing.
16-12: I hoed pumpkins. It was awfully hot & I didn't get too much done, It seems to be too hot for anything but weeds to grow.
17-12: I finished hoeing a row of pumpkins, & had a bath then got dressed & went to town. Had an awful job with my bike as the handles got messed up.
18-12: There was a meeting held by the C.E. a fair program was carried out but the attendance was poor.
19-12: I pulled 14 doz. pines & a case of tomatoes. I forgot about 2 doz. pines & left them lying in the row & they got sunburnt & spoilt. It was very hot seems as though it could very easily rain.
20-12: Tom & I took a good load of produce to the station for Arthur. Old Duke had to stop 3 or 4 times going up the hill
21-12: I did a little hoeing in the afternoon. Cecil & I went to town & bought a present for Nellie Gill. We were at the party in the evening & there was a rare crowd, it was between 2 & 3 o'clock in the morning when we got home.
22-12: I think both Cecil & myself felt very seedy after the party, & as a result very little work was done. I picked a few pines & a couple of tins of tomatoes & Charlie took them down to the dairy for us.
23-12: Was awfully hot & I hardly did any work. It grew into a storm in the evening, but it was not much & was rather close all night.
24-12: Was rather stormy but did not come to anything. We went to town & roamed around the city for a while.
25-12: I stopped at home all day.
26-12: Tom & I rode by bike to Boongary & put in a pleasant day with the Good Templars.
27-12: I was at a picnic of the Campbell Street Methodist Endeavours, it was very hot but we had a fair time.
28-12: I sent some pines to town & Mt. Morgan. I did not do much as I did not feel too fresh after the holidays.
29-12: I hoed amongst the pines.
30-12: I did a little hoeing and went to Newman's to see about tomatoes. Went to Toms for tea as Mother and Laura were in town.
31-12: I got up at 5 o'clock & me t Mrs. Newman with a tin of tomatoes. I went up to Mt. Morgan by the half past 10 train. In the afternoon I took a couple of photos of Mt. Morgan from Mrs. Goodaths verandah. After I went to bed there was an awful row with crackers going off until midnight.
