Avro Shackleton MR.3/3 WR977

An early Mk 3 Shackleton, WR977 served with five different squadrons and now is the only Mk 3 Phase 3 Shackleton preserved in a volunteer-managed air museum (at Newark) in the UK. This aircraft entered service with 220 Sqn in 1958, and in 1966 was upgraded to Phase 3, returning to operational service with 42 Sqn. Its final stint was with 203 Sqn, and was retired in November 1971 at RAF Thorney Island, then being moved to RAF Finningley. In 1977 the aircraft preserved at Finningley were due to be scrapped, but ina race against time, after being purhased by museum member Stuart Stephenson it was dismantled and moved to Newark on 7 lorries on May 1, 1977. It took just 4 weeks to be reassembled, and is now owned by the Lincolnshire Lancaster Association.
